Mercy Cheredi Chore is an accomplished Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over five years of experience at the intersection of law, technology, and data protection. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, Mercy brings an incisive understanding of commercial and regulatory issues, particularly within the tech, telecommunications, intellectual property (IP), and data privacy sectors. A strong independent work ethic, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for the innovative regulation of digital spaces mark her legal career.
Currently, she serves as an Associate Advocate and Head of the Intellectual Property & Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) Sub-Unit at CM Advocates LLP. Under her leadership, the sub-unit expanded its client base by 50% within just six months. Mercy has successfully provided legal counsel on over 80 IP and technology matters, ranging from trademark registration and licensing to digital media rights and cybersecurity compliance. She has litigated more than 30 contentious IP cases before major regulatory bodies, including KIPI, KECOBO, and the High Court of Kenya. Her work includes managing expansive portfolios of IP assets and supporting complex enterprise software transactions.
In parallel, Mercy works as a Data Protection and Risk Management Specialist at Barizi Data Protection Services, where she leads privacy impact assessments, policy development, regulatory audits, and compliance training. Her strategic approach helps businesses navigate Kenya’s evolving data protection landscape with precision and confidence.
Previously, she served as an Associate Advocate at CFL Advocates, focusing on commercial law, IP, and cross-border transactions. During this time, she advised on more than 100 commercial agreements and provided legal opinions on business formation, mergers, acquisitions, and regulatory frameworks for virtual currencies and anti-money laundering.
Mercy began her career as a Legal Assistant at CFL Advocates and as an Intern at both Odhiambo PX & Co. Advocates and the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development, and Public Works. Across these roles, she gained foundational experience in conveyancing, corporate registrations, court proceedings, and legal drafting.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Kenyatta University and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. She has continued to upskill through programs such as the Data Protection Course at Strathmore University, a copyright course at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center, and training in ADR for IP and Tech Disputes at WIPO. She is also pursuing professional certifications, including Certified Secretaries (CS) and Certified in Cybersecurity (CC) from ISC².
Mercy is a full member of the Law Society of Kenya, the East African Law Society, and the International Information System Security Certification Consortium. In addition to her legal proficiency, she is fluent in English and Kiswahili and proficient in French.
